Platform by Michael Hyatt – Book Review

As a part of my self-improvement process, I make an effort to constantly have some form of educational material near me at all times.  Over the past few weeks, I’ve been listening to Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World by Michael Hyatt on my drives to and from work.  When I came across the book, and I had not heard much about it’s author, but as it was one of the top rated marketing books on Amazon, I felt I needed to give it a listen and see what he had to say about developing a powerful marketing platform.

Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World is an incredibly in-depth, 60 chapter guide to building an online platform from the ground up.  The book takes you through Michael’s personal journey of creating a blog and developing it into a viable promotional platform and provides very clear instructions on what to do, how to do it and better yet, how to do it the right way.  The book covers quite a bit of Michael’s background, and takes you from setting up a blog, promoting yourself online and even goes so far as to provide tips for becoming a better interviewer and public speaker.

The book is broken down into 5 sections on creating a “Wow” product, exposing it to the world, building an online platform for your product, growing your product/platform online and utilizing social media.  The book is well-organized and doesn’t jump constantly from topic to topic.  Michael did a great job of o

What I gradually began to notice as I listened to Michael read his book (he’s narrates it quite well, although I couldn’t help but hear Stewie from Family Guy every time he said a word starting with “wh”) is that while it does a great job of laying out everything you need to develop a platform online, it all seemed to be information that I’ve heard before.  I continued listening chapter after chapter and by the end of the book I had confirmed it; this book is intended to help people with no online marketing knowledge get started and offers very little for people who have had some experience in the industry, other than a reference to go back to when you need a reminder.

The Good

Platform by Michael Hyatt is an absolutely fantastic resource for not only understanding how to start and grow your on online platform, but gives you a deep understanding as to why you should.  Plenty of resources out there can walk you step by step through creating a blog, promoting it and generating revenue, but nobody I’ve read comes close to what Michael Hyatt has in his explanation of why it’s necessary.  He does this by taking you through his own journey through blogging and creating an online platform for promotion.

Michael does an exceptional job of highlighting the tools and tricks he’s learned through his journey and provides you with a very clear pathway to creating your own successful platform.  In all honesty, if after reading this book you can’t at least get yourself halfway there, you weren’t paying much attention.

The Not So Good

One thing that I’ve learned over the years is that the truly successful are never, ever going to share the deepest darkest secrets they’ve learned about creating success online.  If you’ve spent any time researching marketing online, you’ve likely come across the same tired information time and time again, and that’s ok, it’s the nature of the internet.  While I didn’t go into this book expecting to have the secrets of creating a successful online platform revealed to me, I at least hoped I would walk away with a few more gems of wisdom than I did.

Overall, Platform by Michael Hyatt is Worth It

Regardless of my let downs, the book is an absolute must for anyone wanting to take a stab at marketing online.  The book is a great resource for not only understanding why you need to build a platform online, but understanding every last step you need to take to be successful.

If you’re looking to take a stab at developing your own platform, or you have been struggling to find success in the world of content marketing, I would sincerely suggest giving the book a try, it will certainly leave you with some knowledge from an industry expert.
